Food loss waste (FLW) contributes to a staggering amount of environmental harm, and the impact is magnified as it occurs further downstream, e.g., in our kitchens, especially when it involves fruits, vegetables, and meat. If FLW were a country, in 2010 it would have been the third largest greenhouse gas emitter globally after China (21% of global emissions) and the United States (13% of global emissions) (Ritchie and Roser, 2020; FAO, 2013a). In a 2021 report, the U.S. EPA estimated that each year, food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions (excluding landfill emissions) in the U.S. alone. That's equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants! Plus, that estimate does not include the significant methane emissions from food waste rotting in landfills, nor all of the wasted water, land, pecticides, fertilizer, and energy used to produce food that is never eaten.
